Welcome to the Hartford Homestead!

If you’ve ever been to St. Louis, Missouri, and if you’ve ever found yourself strolling along a tree lined street in South City, and if you’ve ever found yourself walking by what can only be described as a quaint and cozy little home sitting on the corner of two streets no so unlike any other, you may have noticed the birds chirping and an occasional dog barking.  You may have smiled as you heard the children playing at a nearby school.  You would have thought to yourself, “My goodness!  How quiet and peaceful this part of town is.”  And as you ambled through an intersection where one of those streets meets up with an alley, you may have glimpsed out of the corner of your eye a bald gentleman, reminiscent of the Brawny man and Mr. Clean all rolled into one, chasing a chestnut brown chicken around a dumpster, carrying a little Oreo cookie rabbit in his arms.  You may have stopped, wondering whether or not your eyes were playing tricks on you, and turned around for a second look.  Upon closer inspection, you would have noticed a second gentleman, younger, covered in dirt, and very agitated, himself holding a sable bunny and shouting at the first gentleman.  Now, if you happened to have been in St. Louis, in South City, and seen this play out, you would have already encountered five of the characters that you are going to meet here at the Hartford Homestead.

 Matt (and friends)

Don

My name is Matt!  I live in South St. Louis City along with my partner, Don (the Brawny-Clean hybrid), our two rabbits (Gussie and Whoopie), our eight thirteen chickens (who you will be introduced to a little later), and one roommate (Anna--heretofore referred to as the Polecat).

The Polecat

We live in that quaint and cozy house on the corner of those two tree lined streets in that peaceful neighborhood (well, aside from the occasional domestic dispute or knife fight across the street), not so unlike any other.  Now, up until a year or so ago, our home was known simply as the Hartford House, but we decided to make some changes to our lifestyle and felt that warranted a change in the title of our little slice of heaven, thus the Harford House became the Hartford Homestead.  That is what this blog is about.

                          Gussie                                                   Whoopie

Now, I don’t fancy myself extraordinarily witty (although Gussie finds me rather drole), and I whiff the punchline to every joke I try, and no one knows how the stories I tell end because sometimes I even put MYSELF to sleep, but Don is always cracking himself up.  So, we wanted someplace where we could share with our family, friends, and anyone else interested the happenings in our lives-lives which we have decided to try and live in a more sustainable and healthy way.  We have a lot of comings and goings on here at the Hartford Homestead: trying to live a more healthy and active lifestyle (inspired by “paleo” and “primal” living); gardening and growing our own food; trying recipes that we find, modify, or invent (we meaning me, since I’m pretty sure Don’s definition of fine dining is a piece of grilled chicken and cottage cheese, while singularly shying away from anything that even remotely resembles a green vegetable); raising bunny rabbits; being urban chicken farmers; and any other thing that we fall into face first or bass ackwards.  Thanks for joining us on our everyday adventures, and while we know we aren’t being too terribly revolutionary or changing the world (well, except in our own minds), we hope we can entertain you, inspire you, or at least post some pictures of cute fluffy animals that will make you go “Awwwww,” in spite of yourself, here at the Hartford Homestead.
